- Folder actions is a feature in OS X that lets you connect scripts to folders on your Mac. A folder action script includes one or more event handlers that run in response to certain events, such as opening, closing, or adding items to the connected folder. With folder actions, you can create automated workflows that.
- Using folder actions, you can get the name and the path of each item added. For example: on adding folder items to thisfolder after receiving addeditems repeat with theitem in addeditems set.
I'm trying out folder actions for the first time, and I cannot get an action to trigger.
I regularly use Automator, and I've saved a script as a Folder Action plug-in attached to a folder. I've tried this with several different scripts.
For example, I've got a script that just displays a message. It works fine if I save it as an app, so I save it as a Plug In>Folder Action. If I select, say, my documents folder, I right click>more>attach a folder action. I then select my script. If I open the Folder Actions Setup, my script is listed as attached to my documents folder. However, if I drop a file into the Documents folder, nothing happens.
Am I correct in thinking that the script should run when a file is dropped into the folder (and if I'm wrong, how would you do this?), or have I missed something?
I'm using 2x 2,8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac, OsX 10.5.6.
Cheers

Folder Actions Dispatcher Mac
To save and install the Folder Actions workflow, type Command-S (⌘S) or choose “Save” from the File menu in Automator. Enter a name for the workflow in the forthcoming naming sheet. Click the sheet’s “Save” button and the workflow will be installed in the following directory and the Folder Actions server will be activated. If you ever want to see the folder actions assigned to a folder you can Control click on them, go to Services and select Folder Action Setup, then run Service if it prompts you for that. Then you can see a list of the folder actions and even go right to the Workflow itself to edit in case you've forgotten where the folder actions are stored.

Installing Photoshop actions is very easy – this short guide will show you how to install them. This guide is for both Windows and Mac computers.
Please note that the actions downloaded from Contrastly are compatible with Photoshop CS4 and all newer versions – except where noted – and are not compatible with Photoshop Elements.
The very first step after downloading some Photoshop actions is to unzip the file. Then, once you have a folder on your computer that contains the .atn files simply open up Photoshop.
Once it’s open, double-click on each action file (.atn) and they will appear in the Actions panel in Photoshop. If the Actions panel is not open, click on the “Window” menu and select “Actions” to open up the panel.
You’re now ready to use the actions: open up an image in Photoshop and try running a “play all” action. Once the action is done running, open up the Layers panel and you will see all the rendered groups. You can now toggle them on/off to see the effect, change opacity, etc…
